The Womens competition has now being divided into two grades, with each grade comprising of 5 teams.
In a low scoring, hard fought close affair Vets were able to narrowly defeat Burra 18-15. Sue Kerse rebounded very strongly and was awarded top votes. Other votes went to Chelsea Alvaro and Amanda Wood.
Mystics were able to break Sonics unbeaten record with a 1 point win. (18-17). Jamie-Lee Walker, Zoe Burns and Vanessa Morris were awarded votes.
Kerry Dyer hasn’t lost any of her form over the break and she was able to guide her Patriots (1) team mates to overcome a determined Kella side, with the score line being 36-24. Dyer was rightfully rewarded for her efforts, as were Steph Ryan and Toni Burns.
Sapphires got ever so close to securing their first win, however it wasn’t to be going down to Fury 13-10. Keisha Hunter proved to be the savior for Fury and was awarded three votes, Sophie Hosken two and fill-in Rachael Gearing 1.
Patriots 2 and Benchwarmers had the bye.
Game 9 (2013)
Thursday 12th December saw the final games of basketball played before a well earned break.
Patriots 2 continue to play some good basketball and defeated Kella 40-22. Sonya Smith, Theresa Jetta and Alannah Richards were all awarded votes.
In what was a close game Burra defeated Patriots 1 by 4 points 26-22. Sophie Alderton once again attracted the umpires eye and was awarded votes as were Kerry Dyer and Louise Davies.
A very colourful scoresheet didn’t assist Vets when they went down by 2 points to Sonics 26-28. Zoe Burns proved that shooting practice pays off and she was awarded three votes. Sally Trunfio and Shelley Lombardini were the other vote getters.
Benchwarmers (23) were determined to come away with a win against Fury (14), in what was Kylah Bertolini’s final game prior to leaving town. Votes were awarded to Bertolini, Keryn Atkins and Maddie Simmonds. Geoff Ryan’s umpiring was the highlight of the game, even if it was in his thongs!
Unfortunately for Sapphires they were unable to bring up their first win and were soundly beaten by Mystics 39-6. Erin Keamy was the shining light for Mystics and come away with votes as did Maddie Crook and Amy McKeown.
Basketball is now in recess until the 6th February 2014. We wish all players, umpires and supporters a very Merry Xmas and we hope to see you back in the New Year.
GAME 8
With only 1 game remaining prior to the Christmas break teams are jostling to secure their position on the premiership ladder.
In the mens competition Titans forfeited to Cats.
Barbarians had a hard fought game overcoming Mustangs winning 38-31. Gary Anderson was sidelined for the blood rule; however this didn’t stop him coming away with top votes. The remaining votes were awarded to Dylan Sexton and Scott Cooper.
Burra Boys brought up their second win for the year defeating Brawlers 32-27. Jack Price continued his excellent form and was awarded three votes; two votes went to Cam Davey and one to Chad Riley.
Bruce Rock secured their 5th win of the season defeating Bulls 53-26. Enerson Gamiao, George Heinrich and Rod Okley were awarded fairest and best votes.
GAME 7
Unfortunately for Sapphires they were trounced by Burra 60-6. Sophie Alderton was a welcome return to the Burra outfit and she outclassed her rivals. Alderton, Chelsea Alvaro and Sophie Hoskens were the vote recipients.
It was obvious that Erin Keamy has been busy practicing her shooting during the week, scoring 25 point for the night, when Mystics defeated Fury 45 to 21. Votes were awarded to Keamy, Keisha Hunter and Ashlei Otway.
Sonics 47 defeated Kella 13. Young Emily Drakeford found some form and scored freely for her side. She was awarded three votes, Zoe Burns two and Steph Ryan one.
Benchwarmers were unable to bring up a win for birthday girl Tash Caplan going down to Vets 27-17. With the return of Judy Jefferys from mother of the groom duties and temporary retiree Dani Trunfio stringing two games together Vets worked well as a team. Best players went to Shelley Lombardini, Kristy Cooper and Judy Jefferys.
Game 6 of the Merredin Basketball Association was played on Thursday 21st November, with a mixed bag of results.
Sapphires were unable to bring up their first win of the season going down to Patriots (2) 38-12. Teresa Hayden again attracted the umpire’s eye and was awarded 3 votes. Other votes went to Sophie Hosken and Kate Dixon.
In a Low scoring game Burra defeated Benchwarmers 18-12. Louise Davies used her strength and speed to assist her team come away with the win. Davies, Keryn Atkins and Chelsea Alvaro were all awarded votes.
Sonics has a two point win over Mystics 18-16 to keep their unbeaten run alive. Best and fairest votes were awarded to Zoe Burns, Vanessa Morris and Asha Carr.
Fury has found some form winner two games in a row. They defeated Patriots 1 26-20. All three vote getters, Kylie Howard, Keisha Hunter and Kerry Dyer have played consistently all year.
It what proved to be an exciting game Vets defeated Kella 38-36. It was great to see Dani Trunfio come out of retirement, donning the number 7 uniform of Judy Jefferys. Sue Kerse rebounded well for Vets and was rewarded with votes, as were Marleena McIntosh and Shelley Lombardini.
Game 5
There were some very close games of basketball played this week, as players start to hit their straps.
Although Patriots 1 made a good recovery from a low scoring first half they were unable to defeat Sonics, with the score being 33-22. The three vote getters were Nat Purdy, Kerry Dyer and Zoe Burns.
In what was a very close game Kella defeated Benchwarmers 34-33. Benchwarmers had the upper hand for majority of the game, however young Stephanie Ryan was able to score some much needed points to secure the win. Ryan was awarded three votes for her efforts, with other votes going to Tash Caplan and Alannah Richards.
With scores level at half time the game between Mystics and Vets shaped up to be a thriller. Under the guidance of coach Donna Crook Mystics were able to regroup after half time and come away with a comfortable win 35-18. Asha Carr, Erin Keamy and Judy Jeffery were all awarded votes.
Burra and Patriots 2 played out the first draw of the season. The windy conditions didn’t do any favours for both teams, with scoring opportunities hard to come by. Votes were awarded to Louise Davies, Theresa Jetta and Amanda Swartz.
2012/13 runners up Fury finally got their first win for the season defeating Sapphires 37-12. Keisha Hunter continued her consistent form, as did Maddy Crook and Michelle Price.
Game 4 of the Merredin Basketball Association was played in rather windy conditions, making scoring opportunities on the outside court hard to come by.
In the womens competition Patriots 2 defeated Fury 37-16. Rebecca Waye played very well for Patriots and was awarded votes as were Renee Manning and Marika Hayden.
Vets suffered their first loss for the season going down to Patriots (1) 30-22. It would appear that Kerry Dyer hasn’t had any trouble adapting from netball and continued to score freely throughout the night. Dyer, Sally Trunfio and Kylie Howard were all awarded votes.
Sonics easily accounted for Sapphires 39-7. Zoe Burns again played well as did Natalie Purdy and Maddy Crook.
Burra welcomed the return of Sophie Alderton, who had a field day scoring 26 of her teams points. They defeated Kella 38-6. Alderton took away the three votes, with the remaining votes going to Alyse Tyson and Louise Davies.
In a hard fought game, which went down to the wire Mystics 22 defeated Benchwarmers 18. Erin Keamy scored consistently throughout the game, and umpires awarded her votes. Other votes went to Kristy Cooper and Kylah Bertolini.

Game 3 of the Merredin Basketball Association was played in very warm conditions.
Vets were on a mission to improve their percentage defeating Sapphires 49-10. Judy Jefferys again appeared amongst the vote getters as did Tracey Berryman and Amy McKeown.
Patriots 1, Kerry Dyer and Kylie Howard went on a scoring frenzy and were awarded votes for their efforts. They defeated Benchwarmers 28-12. Keryn Atkins worked tirelessly for her team and was awarded 1 vote.
Burra has a convincing win over Fury 27-8, with Michelle Price, Renee Manning and Keisha Hunter all gaining votes from the umpires.
Erin Keamy had a blinder scoring a game high 22 points. Her team Mystics defeated Kella 42-8. She was awarded votes as was Rachel Luers and Vanessa Morris.
Patriots 2 couldn’t overcome a slow start going down to Sonics 26-21. Umpires awarded votes to Kelly Robbins, Sonya Smith and Jemma Dayman.
Players are reminded that fees are now due. They must be paid prior to taking the court.
Game 2 of the Merredin Basketball Association was played on Thursday 24th October.
Patriots 1 recorded their first win for the season defeating Kella 27 – 17. Best players were Kerry Dyer, Sam Griffiths and Toni Burns.
Bridget Lahy showed she is not suffering from home sickness, once again attracting votes from the umpires. Her team Burra defeated Mystics 20 – 14. Other votes were awarded to Vanessa Morris and Adele Alvaro.
After dusting off the pre-season cobwebs Benchwarmers had a convincing win over Sapphires 46 to 17. Best players being Keryn Atkins, Maddy Crook and Kylah Bertolini.
As they say “age shall not weary them” and Vets certainly demonstrated this. They defeated Patriots (2) 47-20 keeping their unbeaten record alive. Best players were Judy Jefferys, Shelley Lombardini and Theresa Jetta.
Sonics continued on their merry way defeating Fury 30-16, with best votes being awarded to Keisha Hunter, Tosha Harrison and Michelle Price.
Game 1 of basketball for season 2013/2014 were played on Thursday 17th October, with the seniors competition comprising of 10 women’s and eight men’s teams.
Last years A womens premiers Sonics had a win over Burra 20-14, with Natalie Purdy top scoring with 11 points. Best players were Bridget Lahy, Nat Purdy and Zoe Burns.
Vets 35 had a convincing win over Fury 24. Best players were Judy Jefferys, Keisha Hunter and Shelley Lombardini.
Keller women have injected some youth into their team and had a win over Sapphires 23-12. Best players were Maddi Crook, Sam Griffiths and Ashleigh Silver.
Mystics 36 defeated Patriots (1) 16. Asha Carr was on fire earning her top votes from the umpires. Other best players were Kerry Dyer and Jamie-Lee Walker.
Teresa Jetta put on an excellent display of her basketball skills which helped her team Patriots 2 overcome last years B women premiers Benchwarmers 33 to 12. Best players being Teresa Jetta, Kristy Cooper and Marika Hayden.
